Olivier is such a good boss—today he gave us the day off because of the heat, haha.
Since he had to deliver wine to a client in Lyon, we hitched a ride and stole three precious hours of free time in the city. By evening, we found ourselves with the entire big house to ourselves.
Two things about the French really struck me today:
1. Their love of art. And I mean “art” in the broadest sense—music, theater, film, painting, everything. On the way to Lyon, the local radio played a song from one of my favorite films, Jules and Jim. That instantly sparked a conversation with Olivier. He’s a huge fan of Jeanne Moreau and can rattle off French films like an encyclopedia. He even told me that his three-year-old daughter adores Debussy’s Clair de Lune—she listens to it and just starts dancing. Many of his relatives also work in the arts: singers, stage performers, you name it.
That’s the feeling I get from Beaujolais—if you’re not making wine, you’re probably making art. And if you’re doing something else, you almost certainly still love art.
2. Their balance between family and self. Since Olivier’s wife has been away on a work trip, he’s been doing it all—cooking, laundry, school runs, vineyard work. And he does it with such calm patience, like the model of a modern husband. But when there’s a party? He has no problem sending his daughter to stay overnight with relatives so he can enjoy his own freedom. Honestly, it feels very balanced.
So here we are, two guests left alone in a giant house. What do we do with it?
